3 Ways To Bounce Back From a Relapse

A relapse can make you feel like a failure. The problem is how you look at it. You will likely continue using or drinking if you feel sorry for yourself.

However, if you look at relapse as a lesson learned, you can bounce back stronger than ever. Let’s discuss three ways to bounce back from a relapse stronger than ever before.

1. Find Out Your Triggers and Avoid Them

Each person will have different triggers that can lead to a relapse. After a relapse, it’s essential to identify what led to your relapse and change whatever you can so it doesn’t happen again.

For example, you want to ask yourself what you thought about or felt when you decided to use. Were you feeling an intense emotion like anger or anxiety? Were you watching a triggering movie before that may have shown people drinking so the image was placed into your mind? Once you figure out what trigger or triggers led to your relapse, you can work on making sure that it doesn’t happen again. You may need to reevaluate your people, places, and things. Once you figure out these triggers, you can avoid them at all costs.

2. Make Self-Care a Priority

After a relapse, it’s normal to start to feel guilty or bad about it. But instead, love yourself and practice self-care more. Sometimes when we begin to slack on our self-care routine, the potential for relapse can increase. So, the best way to bounce back after a relapse is to put your self-care routine first. Some great ways to practice self-care include the following:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Journal
  • Paint
  • Spend time in nature
  • Take a long bubble bath with essential oils or salts
  • Exercise
  • Eat a clean diet
  • Get a full night’s rest

You don’t have to carve out hours for yourself, either. Just dedicate twenty minutes or so a day to shower yourself with love. If you notice that you are beginning to slack off on your self-care, then it’s a good idea to reach out for help.

3. Reach Out for Help

The third way to bounce back from a relapse is to ask for help. One of the best ways to get help is to look for recovery companions. A recovery companion or coach can spend time with you, help you avoid your triggers, remind you to practice self-care and give you advice.

A recovery companion is a person who’s living in recovery, too. Therefore, they know what challenges you may face and can offer solutions.

You may need a medical detox if your relapse lasted longer than a day or two. A coach or a sober companion can also help you get into a detox treatment and be with you when you are ready to get back into the world and start again.
