What drug is the most addictive?
Wow, this is a very “loaded’ question. All recreational drugs are addictive in one way or another, but there is one that stands alone. Before we get there let’s examine why drugs are addictive. Let’s start with cocaine. Cocaine causes a chemical euphoric release in the brain which users want to feel over and over which becomes addictive in a behavioral sense. Cocaine addicts search for that euphoric release on a regular basis which, in turn, becomes addictive and interferes with their everyday lives in a negative way. However, cocaine is far from a physically addictive drug. It is more of a psychologically addictive drug, therefore making it easier to quit or get off of. Don’t confuse this with the fact that cocaine is harmless because it is far from harmless. The chase for the euphoric rush has ruined many lives.
Next, let’s look at alcohol. Alcohol is legal so it should be the least addictive or least harmful of all the recreational drugs, right? Not so fast. Alcohol does a high rate of damage to the body as far as drugs are concerned and alcohol becomes a physically addictive drug when abused at a high level. Have you ever seen a heavy drinker get the “shakes” when they can’t get a drink? Have you ever seen an alcoholic have seizures when deprived of alcohol? Well, trust me, this happens on a regular basis when alcoholics are deprived of alcohol. Some actually can hemorrhage and have strokes, which lead to death. Alcohol also destroys internal organs.
This brings us to the most addictive drug of them all. Of course, we haven’t even scratched the surface when it comes to addictive drugs in between the drugs we have just discussed and the one we are about to discuss, but the most addictive drug of them all is heroin or opiates. Heroin and all opiates bind to the body’s natural pain receptors and shut down the body’s ability to produce natural painkillers because the receptors are reading that the pain receptors are already “numbing” or “killing” the body’s pain. Because of this, when the heroin addict or opiate addict is deprived of the drug and the existing opiates leave the brain’s receptors in about 24 hours there are no natural painkillers left since the brain has told the body to stop producing the natural painkillers. Remember, because of the heroin binding to the brain’s pain receptors this has caused the brain to stop producing natural pain killers. This sends the body into complete withdrawal. The addict has severe flu-like symptoms and this pushes the addict to go to any and all means to avoid that “sickness”. This makes heroin and all opiates the most addictive drug around.
