Dr. Cali Estes: NFL Needs more Anger Management Resources Off the Field!
NFL players have been taught from a very young age to perform at a very high level both physically and, to be completely honest, violently. American Pro Football is our country’s favorite sport. It generates billions of dollars and hours of the highest quality of sports entertainment on the planet. But more often we are hearing horrible stories of off the field violence that is leading to the arrests of many NFL players and, at times, great physical harm to others.
Of the 9 billion brought in annually, the NFL hands out an extremely small fraction of this income to help players with anger issues off the field. Alarmingly, more than 20 current NFL players have been charged off the field with a violent offense. The way the NFL portrays this is that it employs 1,700 players a year and only 20 arrests is a very small portion of its workforce. But in reality, 20 violent off the field arrests is alarming. Once a violent act occurs, we are well aware of how fine the line is to take a minor violent offense to a major act of violence…or worse, a deadly act. Are these owners playing Russian Roulette by not being more proactive? Could they be doing more?
Each NFL team could hire a coach like the ones at Top Rated Addiction Recovery and Sober Coaching Services to work with troubled players to lower the possibility of off the field issues.
