FAU coach Pelini quits after drug alligations

Florida Atlantic University football coach Carl Pelini abruptly resigned late Wednesday morning after being confronted about illegal drug use, athletic director Pat Chun said.

Pelini’s resignation and that of defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis were effective immediately.

“On Monday, I was made aware of these concerns and I immediately reported the allegations to our General Counsel,” Chun said. “The University acted quickly and decisively to follow up and take action that is in the best interests of our student-athletes and the University overall. I can assure you that we have no information that suggests anyone other than these two individuals engaged in these activities.

“It is a heartbreaking day for us all. Their conduct was unacceptable to me, the athletic department and the university.”

Chun said he didn’t expect any criminal charges to be filed regarding the incident.

“I apologize for exercising poor judgment,” Pelini said in a statement. “My greatest concerns at this time are for my family, the dedicated FAU players and my staff. I am confident that Pat Chun and the university administration will continue to move the program forward.”‘

Offensive coordinator Brian Wright will replace Pelini on an interim basis.

The Owls were 5-15 the past two seasons under Pelini, who previously was defensive coordinator for his brother, Bo, at Nebraska.

Pelini replaced Howard Schnellenberger after the 2011 season.

FAU (2-6, 1-4 Conference USA) lost at Auburn 45-10 last week. The Owls will host Tulane (6-2, 4-0) on Saturday.
